Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for high tension separation
   • Access, interpret and apply high tension separation documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret and clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Communicate with other personnel using approved communication methods
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select appropriate type of auxiliary equipment for work activities
   • Perform equipment pre-start checks to ensure equipment is ready for operation
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods
   • Ensure area is well ventilated before entry into work area
2. Start-up equipment in sequence
   • Carry out start-up procedures and complete start-up checks according to plant configurations and system requirements
   • Confirm plant is operational
3. Operate and monitor equipment
   • Read and interpret data from equipment indicators to determine separation efficiency
   • Continuously inspect and monitor plant and identify defects and potential problems
   • Assess mineral content of ore according to separation parameters
   • Make appropriate adjustments to separation process to optimise targets
   • Adjust equipment to approved parameters to optimise separation performance, maintain efficient separation and to meet product quality targets
   • Control feed to separation equipment
   • Carry out minor maintenance to maintain condition of equipment
   • Complete all required written documentation clearly, concisely, and on time
   • Pass on end of shift information verbally or in writing to oncoming shift
4. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate equipment
   • Shutdown or isolate equipment based on process and safety requirements
   • Perform post shutdown or isolation checks
   • Return equipment to service
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Process records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of high tension separation including:

apply lifting techniques (manual, cranes and loads)

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the high tension separation in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of high tension separation that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

assessing mineral content of ore according to separation parameters

making adjustments to separation process to optimise targets

adjusting equipment to optimise separation performance and efficiency

controlling feed to separation equipment

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting high tension separation through:

accessing, interpreting and applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

breakdown procedures

environmental procedures

equipment safety requirements

isolation procedures

WHS, site safety and emergencies

operational procedures and checks

site procedures

hazardous substance procedures and consequences of spills
